Nicholas Gregory Mankiw (; born February 3, 1958) is an American macroeconomist and the Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics at Harvard University. Mankiw is best known in academia for his work on New Keynesian economics. From 2003 to 2005, Mankiw was chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under President George W. Bush. In 1975, he studied astronomy at the Summer Science Program. He worked as a staff economist for the Council of Economic Advisers from 1982–83, foreshadowing his later position as chairman of that organization. After leaving the Council, he earned his PhD in economics from MIT in 1984.
